Sterling Breaks Season Hit Record in 5-3 Devil Win

(Elizabethtown, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team scored four runs in the sixth inning, and held off a late rally attempt to defeat Elizabethtown, 5-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Senior Andrew Sterling (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) put the Devils on the board in the third inning after reaching on a single. He stole third, and scored on an error to give Dickinson a 1-0 lead.

 

The Blue Jays used a pair of singles and a pair of sacrifices to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.

 

The Devils answered with four runs in the sixth. Senior Tyler Rosa' (Carmel, Calif./Stevenson School) started things off with a solo homerun to right field.

 

Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) doubled and would eventually come in to score as Sterling drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded. Matt Tuneski (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) added a stolen base and first-year Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Mt. Kisco) drove in two runs with a single in the inning as well.

 

The Blue Jays loaded the bases and pushed across two runs in the eighth before the Devils closed the door for the final of 5-3. Elizabethtown put a runner on in the ninth, then the Devils retired the next three batters.

 

Sterling set the school record for hits in a season, recording his 58th of the year, going 3-for-4 on the day. That eclipses the mark of 56, by Ryan Stearrett in 2006. He added an RBI and scored once to tie the season single mark for runs scored with 39. He stole a pair of bases as the Devils tied the single season record with a combined 77 thefts this spring.

 

Kaufman recorded his 10th double of the year, adding two hits on the afternoon.

 

First-year Charlie Gaines (Phoenix, Md./St. Paul's School) earned the win, going five innings, allowing one run and one walk while scattering four hits. Senior Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown) came on in relief, earning the save.

 

The Red Devils raised their school record for wins in a season, improving to 23-12 overall. They return home for a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Swarthmore. First pitch is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
