(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson College baseball team used some timely hitting with some hot bats to post an 8-2 win over visiting Gettysburg on Tuesday afternoon. The Red Devils erased a 2-0 deficit to overtake the Bullets for their first Centennial Conference win of the season.
The Bullets capitalized on back-to-back lead-off walks in the second and third innings to score a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead at the end of the third.
The Devils rallied with two outs in the fourth, triggered by a double from senior Garrett Horan (Providence, R.I./Moses Brown). Horan came around to score on a single from classmate Jordan Kaufman (Somerset, Pa./Somerset Area) to put the Devils on the board.
Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) put Dickinson in front with a two-run bomb over the leftfield wall to give the Devils a 3-2 lead.
First-year Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) doubled to lead-off the sixth and scored off the bat of Kaufman. Horan drew a walk and scored as Haynes went the other way with a double to stretch the Devil lead to 5-2.
Helmandollar started the eighth with a lead-off walk. He came around to score as first-year Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) launched a two-run shot almost in the same spot as Haynes' homer in the fourth. Kaufman added a double in the eighth and scored on a wild pitch for the final of 8-2.
Haynes went 2-for-4 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored while Kaufman finished 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Horan scored twice, reaching on a walk and the double. Adams went 1-for-1 with his two-run homer while Helmandollar added two runs with a double and a walk as well.
Junior Andrew Mauro (Washington, D.C./Mercersburg) came on to earn the win on the mound. He went six scoreless innings, scattering five hits and allowing just one walk.
The Red Devils improve to 13-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play. They host Messiah College in a non-conference match-up on Wednesday before heading to Gettysburg for the second game of the series on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
