(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #5-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team suffered a 10-9 setback to Washington College, falling 10-9 in overtime on Saturday. The Devils suffer their first home loss since 2009.
The game was billed to be a thriller, and lived up to all expectations with the Shoremen pulling off the win with 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime period as Bennett Cord scored off an assist from Grant Hughes.
Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) put the Devils on the board, scoring off an assist from Nick Leon (Chevy Chase, Md./Gonzaga) with 10:18 remaining in the first quarter.
The teams traded goals for a 2-2 tie at the end of the first. The Devils used a 4-1 run to take a 6-3 lead with 4:01 remaining in the half. Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) found the net just 34 seconds into the period, scoring off an assist from Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep).
Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) capitalized on an extra-man opportunity, scoring off an assist from Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola-Blakefield).
Parker Waldron (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) picked-up a ground ball and scored on a fast break to put the Devils up, 5-3, with 6:35 remaining in the half. Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) put away a feed from Cherry to double-up the Shoremen, 6-3.
Washington scored to pull within two at the end of the half. They pulled even in the third before Cherry scored and assisted Abramson to give Dickinson an 8-6 advantage.
The Shoremen would take advantage of a man-up opportunity to start the fourth quarter. They scored three straight to take a 9-8 lead with 6:16 remaining in regulation.
The Devils finally tallied the equalizer with 1:12 on the clock. Gruppo ripped shot into the net with an assist going to Abramson.
Washington started with possession in overtime but the Devils were able to force a turnover. The Shoremen got the ball back and netted the game-winner with just 30 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
Abramson finished with a hat-trick, scoring three goals to go with one assist. Cherry added a pair of goals and two assist.
Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 11-of-21 face-offs and controlled 10 ground balls. He becomes just the third Red Devil to win over 400 face-offs, raising his career total to 408 on Saturday.
Peter Zouck (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) caused five turnovers and controlled six ground balls. Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) added three caused turnovers and five GBs.
Junior Greg Hanley (Laurel Hollow, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) made five saves and had a pair of GBs in the nets for the Devils.
Patrick Coyle scored three goals and had an assist to lead Washington (8-2, 5-0 CC). Peter Stewart made 17 saves, including seven in the third period.
The Red Devils slip to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Swarthmore College next Saturday for a 3:00 pm face-off.
