(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team returned to the win column, posting a 4-0 victory over visiting Goucher College on Saturday. The Red Devils closed out their final regular season, home schedule in dominant fashion, unloading 52 shots on the day as they improve to 12-3 overall.
First-year Erica Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) led the way with her first collegiate hat-trick, netting the first two goals of the game. Marshall struck twice in a span of just one minute, twenty-four seconds. She put the Devils on the board in the 12th minute, finishing a wild scramble in front of the cage.
Marshall ripped a hard shot from just inside the circle to double the lead with 22:19 remaining in the first half. Senior Julia Applegate (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown Friends) recorded her fourth goal of the season, finishing an assist from first-year Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) in the 16th minute.
Dickinson continued to dominate play for the remainder of the half but the Gophers settled in on defense to keep the Devils off the board. The Red Devils unleashed 29 shots in the opening 35 minutes, forcing nine saves from Demie Huffman and five by Taylor Striar, who came in for the final 12 minutes of the half.
The Red Devils remained in control for the better part of the contest. Goucher did, however, turn in a stronger performance in the second half, forcing eight penalty corners and recording 10 shots.
Senior goaltender Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) was up for the challenge, turning away four shots. Sophomore Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) came on to complete the shutout, facing one shot in the final 12 minutes.
Marshall completed the hat-trick with just over two minutes remaining in the game. Classmate Jenny Davis (Edgewater, Md./Severn School) tallied the assist, sending a long ball into the circle that was redirected by Marshall into the back of the cage.
The Devils outshot the Gophers, 52-11, and held an 11-8 advantage in corners. Striar finished with 14 saves in the nets for Goucher (3-11). Liz Weiner, Antonia DiLuca and Emily Gill each added defensive saves for the Gophers as well.
The Red Devils improve to 12-3 on the season. They return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, traveling to #6-ranked Franklin & Marshall for a 1:00 start.
