(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team continued to roll on Wednesday, posting a 5-1, non-conference win over visiting Frostburg State University. The win marked the eighth straight for the Red Devils, setting a school record for consecutive wins, as they improve to 9-2 on the season.
The Red Devils were again quick to strike, capitalizing on a penalty corner, just 5:13 into the match. First-year Catherine Perlmutter (Blue Bell, Pa./Germantown Academy) found the back of the cage, scoring off assists from Merritt Davis (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest) and Erica Marshall (Baltimore, Md./Garrison Forest).
The Red Devils scored again in the 24th minute as Perlmutter handed out the assist this time, finding Taylor Meehan (Phoenixville, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) to put Dickinson up, 2-0.
After the break, the Devils struck early again, stretching the lead to, 3-0, just six minutes into the second half. First-year Maddie Groves (Acton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) tallied her fourth goal of year on another penalty corner, with an assist from Davis
Perlmutter would rattle the cage for the second time in the game, netting her ninth goal of the season with, just under, 10 minutes remaining to stretch the margin to 4-0. Frostburg spoiled the shutout, scoring off a penalty corner with 7:15 left to play.
The Red Devils continued to keep the pressure up as Marshall struck again, closing out the scoring in the 67th minute for the final of, 5-1.
Senior Katy Schlechtweg (Mount Laurel, N.J./Moorestown Friends) turned in another strong performance in goal, making nine saves, including a pair of outstanding stops on breakaways. Sophomore Caroline Karwel (Fairfax Station, Va./South County Secondary) added a defensive save as well.
Sophomore Megan Grimm played well in the cage for the Bobcats as well, making 10 saves on the day as Frostburg falls to 5-9 overall.
The Red Devils held a 32-15 advantage in shots, including an 18-4 edge in the first half. Corners were relatively even with the Devils forcing 11 while allowing nine on the defensive end of the field.
The Red Devils improve to 9-2 overall and are off to one of the best starts in program history. They return to Centennial Conference action on Saturday, hosting Washington College at 1:00 pm.
