(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Sunday, falling in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship. In a rematch of the Centennial Conference Championship, just one week ago, #14-ranked Franklin & Marshall prevailed with a 3-0 win at Miller Memorial Field.
The Diplomats erupted, midway through the first half, netting three goals in a span of just under three minutes. The Tide turned quickly as Devon Malfitano capitalized on a loose ball after Dickinson goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) attempted to punch out a long serve into the box on a free kick.
The ball went directly to the foot of Malfitano, with virtually an open net. Just 32 seconds later, Ben Beaver would connect as Derek Pawlush played a shot off the crossbar and Beaver was there to put away the rebound. That goal made Beaver the Diplomats' all-time leading scorer.
The Red Devils barely had time to catch their breath before they were staring down another dangerous situation as the Diplomats were awarded a free kick about 40 yards out. Chris Scott served a beautiful ball into the area and Chase TemBrook redirected a header into the cage for a 3-0 advantage.
That goal came with 17:39 remaining in the first half. It would be the last ball in the net as both defenses and goaltenders came up with some big plays throughout the remainder of the match.
The Red Devils had chances in the second half, but simply could not connect for a strong enough opportunity. Javier Mena (San Salvador, El Salvador/The American School) had some great chances late in the match. He put a pair of shots on net that led to a couple of amazing saves from F&M goaltender, T.J. White.
White came up big late in the match, finishing with five saves on the night. He did most of his work in a span of about three minutes as well as Dickinson had a flurry of shots in the late minutes.
The Diplomats improve to 16-3-2 overall and will advance to the "Sweet 16" and will face Rose-Hulman next weekend. In a year of major upsets, top-seed in the region, Ohio Wesleyan fell to Rose-Hulman, 1-0, behind an early goal and relentless defensive effort.
The #23-ranked Red Devils finish the season 15-6-1 overall, making their third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. They advanced to the Centennial Conference semifinals for the third straight season and to the championship game, twice in the past three years.
