(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team, playing its second game in as many nights, received strong play off the bench to wear down visiting Alvernia University en route to a 72-57 win at the Kline Center.
Junior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) scored the first seven points for the Red Devils, adding a pair of blocked shots in the opening five minutes. Dickinson jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Crusaders would answer, tying the game, 16-16, at the 11:36 mark.
Alvernia put together a 13-2 run to pull in front by 11, with 3:25 remaining in the first half. York Suburban grads, senior Tom McInerney (York, Pa./York Suburban) and sophomore Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) closed out the half with solid play, cutting the deficit to, 32-27, at the break.
Wixted and McInerney continued to lead the charge after intermission as the Red Devils regained the lead, just three minutes into the second half. McInerney converted four straight free throws to stretch the advantage to eight, with 12:39 left to play.
McInerney finished a nice assist from Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) and sank two more free throws to give Dickinson a 10-point advantage with 11:38 on the clock.
The Red Devils continued to build on the lead, which grew to as many as 19 in the second half.
McInerney finished with a team-high 18 points, behind a perfect night, hitting 6-of-6 field-goals and six free throws on the night. Wixted scored 17 points to go with nine rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots.
Senior guard Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) tallied nine points and dished out a game-high five assists while classmate Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) was a point shy of a double-double, scoring nine points to go with a game-high 10 rebounds. He handed out four assists on the night, and tallied a steal and blocked shot as well. Hinnenkamp finished with six points and five rebounds.
Brian Parker led Alvernia (5-3) with a game-high 19 points, adding eight rebounds and a pair of steals.
The Red Devils improve to 8-1 on the season. They travel to Virginia for the Coaches Classic, presented by Kay Jewelers, at the end of the year. They face Guilford College on the 28th and then face Randolph Macon on the 29th to close out the year.
