Mules Escape Devils 9-8 on Tuesday

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team rallied, but suffered a heartbreaker on Tuesday, as Muhlenberg came away with a 9-8 decision at MacPhail Field.

The Devils took the lead first as Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by senior James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose) in the second inning.

The Mules answered with a sacrifice of their own, tying the game in the top of the fourth inning. They pushed across five runs in the fifth as Jimmy Cody and Nick Kennedy each drove in a pair of runs.

Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) was hit by a pitch and came around on an error after Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern) singled down the right field line. Sanders came in on a sac fly by Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill) to cut the lead to 6-3, in the sixth.

Cody doubled and came in on another RBI for Kennedy to stretch the margin to 7-3 in the top of the seventh.

Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) reached on an error in the bottom of the inning and moved to third on a double from Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield). Parker scored off the bat of Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) and McCloud scored on a double from Sanders.

Tursi and Primavera led-off the eighth with back-to-back singles and Santoro laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position. Sophomore Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) stepped in to pinch-hit and launched a double to the wall in the left center, scoring both runs to tie the game, 7-7.

Muhlenberg regained the lead on a solo homerun to left field by Joe Villa. The Mules added an insurance run as Kennedy reached on an error and eventually came home on a bases-loaded walk.

The Devils rallied in the ninth, but came up short. DeVivo singled and advanced to third on a pair of passed balls. Tursi hit a deep fly ball to score DeVivo with a sacrifice. A walk and fly out to center closed out the inning with the Mules holding on, 9-8.

Tursi led the Devils at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, an RBI and a double. He also reached on a walk and was hit by a pitch. DeVivo, Sanders and McCloud all went 2-for-4 as the Devils recorded six doubles in the game.

The Mules (18-17, 6-9 CC) were led by Tyler Lantrenta and Cody, who each went 3-for-5 on the day.

The Red Devils (12-23, 3-12) are scheduled to travel to Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday for a 3:30 pm start.
