(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference games to visiting Haverford College on Saturday afternoon. The 'Fords claimed the opener, 5-2, and swept the series with an 11-8 decision in the nightcap.
The Devils scored first in the opener, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) reached on a fielder's choice and came in on an RBI single from senior James Santoro (Freehold, N.J./St. Rose).
Nick Miranda singled, stole a pair of bases and scored on an RBI from Matt Liscovitz to tie the game in the top of the fourth. Haverford added three unearned runs in the fifth.
The Devils got one back in the sixth inning. Santoro walked and scored on a Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.Y./Mount Olive) single.
William Bernard recorded his second RBI of the game in the top of the ninth for the final of 5-2.
Adams had two of the Devils' five hits, adding a double in the eighth. Ryan Kramer (New Vernon, N.J./Morristown Beard) suffered the loss, despite a valiant effort on the mound. He recorded 10 strikeouts, scattering five hits over six and one third innings. Zee Crawford (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) came on in relief, allowing just two hits in the final 2.2 innings.
The Red Devils scratched and clawed their way through game two. Haverford put two runs on the board in the first inning, on a two-RBI single from Alex Hudak.
Helmandollar reached on a single and scored off the bat of Hank Sanders (Wellesville, Pa./Northern) in the bottom half of the inning. Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) singled and came in on Helmandollar's second hit of the game.
Haverford tacked on two runs in the third and fourth innings to pull in front, 6-2. Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill) led-off the fourth with a single to trigger a three run inning. Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) doubled, and Santoro and Sanders added RBIs to cut the lead to 6-5.
Liscovitz walked and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) singled, stole third and scored as Helmandollar reached and went to second on a pair of errors by the shortstop.
The teams traded runs in the seventh. Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) singled and scored on a passed ball. Haverford capitalized on Devils miscues to score two unearned runs in the eighth, and added one more in the ninth.
Helmandollar doubled in the eighth and scored off another RBI from Sanders. He went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the nightcap.
Santoro and Wachs went 2-for-4 while Primavera added a pair of hits as well. Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) recorded five strikeouts in six innings and Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) added three strikeouts in three innings.
The Red Devils slip to 9-15 overall and 0-6 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Gettysburg on Tuesday for a 3:30 pm start.
