(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team found itself in a dogfight with visiting Muhlenberg College, falling in the end, 75-72. The Red Devils battled until the end, and had one last chance to tie the game at the buzzer, but the shot was just off the mark.
Junior Malique Killing had another remarkable game for the Mules, scoring a game-high 35 points. He tied a Centennial Conference record with his third straight, 30-point outing.
The game was close from the very start. Muhlenberg jumped out to an 8-4 lead and went up, 18-14, at the 9:39 mark. An 8-2 run put the Red Devils up by four, 24-20, with 3:44 remaining in the first half. Sophomore Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) knocked-down a three-pointer, off an assist from senior Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) to cap the run.
Angradi buried another three-pointer in the final minute, and Honig dropped a bomb from just across half court at the buzzer to give Dickinson a 34-27 advantage at halftime.
Senior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) scored to open the second and Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) hit a three-pointer to stretch the Red Devil lead to 39-27, just 1:28 in the half.
Killing cut the margin to single-digits with a pair of free throws at the 14:05 mark. Five minutes later he knocked-down a three-pointer to give Muhlenberg the lead, 53-51. That would trigger a see-saw battle that would take place over the final nine minutes.
Honig answered with a three of his own before Killing sandwiched a pair of field-goals around a lay-up from junior Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) to give the Mules a 57-56 lead.
There would be 13 lead changes in the final nine minutes of the contest. Honig and Killing traded three's, putting Muhlenberg up, 69-68, with 2:55 on the clock. Sophomore Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) tied the game with a free throw, with 1:25 remaining in regulation.
Brandon Lewis hit one-of-two free throws on the other end to put the Mules back on top. The Devils were forced to foul on two straight possessions, as Muhlenberg stretched the margin to 73-69, with just 19 seconds to play.
Honig went to the line with 13 seconds left, hitting the first to cut the lead to three. He missed the second, intentionally, and Honig ended up with the ball in the corner. His three-point attempt was long, but went out of bounds, off of Muhlenberg, with just five seconds to go.
Muhlenberg fouled on the in-bound pass and Hinnenkamp converted both ends to pull the Devils within one. Killing sank two free throws on the other end, with just three seconds on the clock.
The Red Devils had to go the length of the floor, and almost saw magic. Cox went high in the air to catch a long feed, tipping the ball to Wixted on the right wing. Wixted had to rush the shot, but it had a chance, coming off the rim at the buzzer.
Killing went 12-for-19 from the floor and 8-for-8 from the line, adding three assists on the night. Kevin Hargrove posted a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, blocking five shots as well. The Mules improve to 12-6 overall and 7-4 in the Centennial Conference.
Honig led the Red Devils with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. Landy finished with 15 points and three rebounds while Hinnenkamp reached double-figures with 11 points. Angradi did as well, recording 11 points behind a trio of three-pointers.
Tom McInerney (York, Pa./York Suburban) added seven points and three rebounds, and Wixted tallied seven rebounds.
The Red Devils slip to 14-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference. They are on the road on Saturday, traveling to Washington College for a 4:00 pm tip-off.
