(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson field hockey team had a strong start at #6-ranked Ursinus on Saturday, but the Bears tallied four goals in the second half to remain unbeaten in the Centennial Conference with a 6-0 win.
The Bears came out firing, putting a pair of shots on goal in the opening minutes but junior goaltender Emily Fuss (Newtown Square, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) was there to turn them away.
The Red Devils played a lot of defense in the early going, but held strong, clearing a pair of penalty corners in the first 11 minutes. Dickinson went on the offensive, making a couple of strong attacking runs but the Bear defense prevented any shots.
Ursinus quickly took control, scoring back-to-back goals in a span of just one minute to pull in front, 2-0, with 16:49 remaining in the first half. Samantha Macchio assisted Devin Brackel, and Brackel returned the favor just 61 seconds later.
The Bears forced another corner, minutes later and Fuss stopped back-to-back shots. The Devils held the Bears scoreless for the remainder of the half, facing down 11 shots and five penalty corners.
Macchio capitalized on a scramble in front of the cage, scoring just 41 seconds into the second half. The Bears banged in goals at the 46:03 mark and again at 47:35 to stretch the lead to 5-0. Stephanie Cooper tallied the first before Danielle Stong redirected a shot from Amber Steigerwalt for the final goal of the day.
The Bears outshot the Devils, 24-1 and held a 12-1 advantage in penalty corners. Fuss made 10 saves as the Devils slip to 11-5 overall and 5-4 in the conference. The Bears improve to 13-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
Dickinson returns home for the regular season finale against #5-ranked Franklin & Marshall at 11:00 am.
