(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team returned to the Centennial Conference Championship with a 77-63 win, over visiting McDaniel College on Friday night. Hosting the tournament for the first time in program history, the Red Devils jumped out to a big first half lead behind a loud and rowdy crowd at the Kline Center.
The Green Terror played even with the Devils in the opening minutes, trailing by just a point at the 13:24 mark. The Red Devils broke away, going on an 18-4 run to stretch the lead to, 31-16, at the 7:23 mark.
Sophomore Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) triggered the run with a lay-up, and closed it with another on the back end. He continued to lead the way as the Red Devils stretched the margin to 25, leading 45-20, at the break.
Dickinson went 6-for-10 from beyond the arc in the first half. Sophomore Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) knocked-down all three of his attempts while Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./LaSalle College) hit 2-of-3 from long range.
The Red Devils held a 20-point advantage for the better part of the second half, leading by as many as 27. McDaniel continued to keep coming, trying to claw their way back into the game. They cut the margin to 17, but Adam Honig (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) answered with another three-pointer to put the Devils up, 70-50, at the 4:18 mark.
The Green Terror finished strong with a 7-1 run to cut the final deficit to 14 at 77-63.
Hinnenkamp turned in a great performance, netting a game and career-high 19 points, hitting 8-of-9 shots from the floor. He added five rebounds and a pair of steals as well. Junior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic) added 13 points, hitting 7-of-9 free throws to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Honig reached double-figures with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists while Angradi and Collins each finished with nine points. Tom McInerney (York, Pa./York Suburban) added nine points as well, and senior Tucker Landy (Durham, Conn./Xavier) turned in a strong performance as well. He anchored the defensive effort, adding a pair of blocked shots and a pair of assists.
Tim Stewart led McDaniel with 16 points and nine rebounds. Evan Pupelis tallied nine points and 10 rebounds. The Green Terror drops to 17-9 on the season.
The Red Devils improve to 21-5, matching the school record for wins in a season, set last year. They advance to the conference final to face Johns Hopkins University on Saturday night, at 7:00 pm. The #3-seed Blue Jays knocked-off #2-seeded Franklin & Marshall, 50-48, in the other semifinal.
