Lions Hand Devils First Loss After 5-0 Start

(Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to The College of New Jersey, 4-2, on Monday afternoon.

 

The Lions put a run on the board in the first inning. John Rizzi singled and stole second to move into scoring position. He moved to third on a failed pick-off attempt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Cocuzza.

 

The Lions added a run in the third inning as Rizzi walked and stole second, once again. He moved to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a Joe Dispoto single to center field.

 

Cocuzza added an insurance run in the sixth inning, taking a similar path. He singled, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. He scored on an RBI single from Josh Limon.

 

The Red Devils looked to rally in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs to cut the deficit to 3-2.

 

Michael DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) led-off the inning with a single. Conor Foote (Narbeth, Pa./Lower Marion) pinch-ran, moving to second as Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) was hit by a pitch. Foote came in to score on a single from catcher Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern).

 

The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning. Mike Murray singled and advanced all the way to third on a Red Devil error. Ben Varrone singled down the line to score Murray, stretching the lead to the final of 4-2.

 

Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill) each went 2-for-4 with a double.

 

Sophomore Jimmy Robertson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) suffered the loss, recording four strikeouts in a six inning effort. Chris Bumstead (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Bryan Wacker (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) each threw and inning of relief.

 

The Red Devils slip to 5-1 on the season. They are off on Tuesday, but return to action on Wednesday, facing Juniata at 9:30 am.
