(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team won its home opener in dramatic fashion, scoring the winning run in the bottom the ninth inning. Remarkably, the run came across on a two-out balk, with the bases loaded.

The Red Devils used timely hitting and received a pair of solid performances on the mound from sophomore starter Jimmy Robertson (Rockville, Md./Richard Montgomery) and classmate Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) came on in relief to earn the win.

Robertson started strong, recording a pair of strikeouts in a one-two-three inning to start the game.

The Blue Jays capitalized on a Red Devil error in the second inning to score three unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead. The Red Devils answered in the bottom of the third as first-year Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) drew a lead-off walk and stole second. He came around to score on an RBI single from senior Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern).

Dolan scored again the seventh as the Devils cut the lead to 4-3 on a double from Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley). Junior Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) reached on a walk and also came into score.

Junior Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) started the Red Devil rally in the ninth with a pinch-hit single. Sophomore Conor Foote (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) pinch-ran, and would beat out a throw as Helmandollar reached on a fielder's choice when the Elizabethtown pitcher tried to get Foote at second.

Dolan singled to reach base for the third time on the day, scoring Foote to tie the game. The Blue Jays intentionally walked Sanders to load the bases. The gamble paid off temporarily as the Blue Jays got a strikeout from Kevin Elwell and Helmandollar was thrown out at the plate on a ball to the shortstop.

Joe Tursi (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) reached on the fielder's choice to keep the bases loaded. Elwell flinched just enough to draw the call, as a balk scored Dolan with the game-winning run.

The Red Devils improved to 11-1 on the season, winning their sixth straight game and the home opener.

Dolan crossed the plate three times, going 2-for-3 on the day with an RBI and a pair of walks. Haynes added two RBIs with his team-high fifth double of the year.

Robertson finished with five strikeouts in five and one third innings, allowing just one earned run. Cowell added three strikeouts and allowed just one hit and one walk to earn the win, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Vaclav Hasik went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Elizabethtown (6-4).

The Red Devils travel to Lancaster Bible College on Friday, and are home again on Saturday, hosting Penn State Schuylkill in a double-header at 12:30 pm.
