Shoremen Rally to Survive Second Straight CC Scare

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team had #6-ranked Washington College in its sights on Saturday, but for the second time in less than a week, the Shoremen survived a scare and escaped with a 16-12 win.

The Shoremen rallied to overcome an 11-8 deficit, entering the fourth quarter. It was a game of streaks as the Red Devils strung together seven straight goals, between the second and third quarters. Washington closed out the game, scoring the final six of the day.

The Red Devils had a strong start, scoring twice in the opening five minutes behind goals from Brett Parker (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School) and Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield).

Grant Hughes put the Shoremen on the board before Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) found the net, off an assist from Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien), with 5:30 to play in the quarter.

Washington pulled even at the end of the period with tallies from Jim Cusick and JD Campbell. Menard and Llewellyn each scored twice in a seven-goal run that carried into the third quarter, putting the Devils in front, 10-5.

Leading 8-5, coming out of the break, Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) dodged his way to the cage and Menard scored off an assist from Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) to close out the run for Dickinson.

Campbell triggered 3-0 stretch for Washington to cut the lead to just two goals. Gleason put Dickinson up, 11-8, with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter.

Washington went right to work in the fourth as Sam Birnbaum scored in the opening minute and Michael Trapp scored off his own face-off win to make the score, 11-10.

Kendall answered with an assist from Gleason to put the Devils back in front by a pair. It was all Washington in the scoring column from that point as the Shoremen would rally.

Hughes broke free to score before Stephen Luck scored back-to-back goals to give the lead back to Washington. Cusick added an insurance goal with 3:05 to play. Luck and Hunter Nowicki tallied late goals for the final of 16-12.

Luck led Washington (11-1, 6-0) with four goals while Ted DiSalvo made 11 saves in the nets.

Menard finished with four goals as well Llewellyn tallied a hat-trick on the day. Sophomore Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made 10 saves in goal for Dickinson. Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won 14-of-28 face-offs on the day.

The Red Devils slip 6-6 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Swarthmore College next Saturday for a 1:00 pm start.
