(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team took one step closer to a playoff berth, holding on for a thrilling 7-6 win at Muhlenberg College on Tuesday afternoon.
The Red Devils scored three runs in the first inning. Senior Hank Sanders (Wellsville, Pa./Northern) drove two runs with a single. Junior Mike Adams (Mount Olive, N.J./Mount Olive) reached on one error and scored on another to put the Devils up, 3-0.
Adams stretched the lead to 4-0 with a solo homerun in the third inning. The Mules looked to rally, scoring lone runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
The Devils did counter with a run in the top of the eighth. Adams would play a key role again, reaching on another error. Senior Conor Foote (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) came on to pinch-run and scored on an RBI by Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's).
First-year Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) tripled in the top of the ninth and senior Joe Tursi (Garden City, Pa./Garden City) tripled to score a pair of insurance runs, stretching the lead to 7-3.
The Mules made one last run, scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth. The Red Devils shut the door, holding on for a 7-6 decision.
Sanders went 2-for-4 on the day, driving in two runs. Tursi finished with two hits, two RBIs and a runs scored. Adams finished the game, 1-for-4, but reaching on a pair of errors, scoring twice on the day.
Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) earned the win, scattering four hits and recording six strikeouts. Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) came on in relief. Moore recorded three strikeouts to earn the save.
The Red Devils reach the 20-win mark for the third time in program history, improving to 20-11 on the season and 6-8 in the Centennial Conference. They will face the Mules again on Friday, first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
