(Carlisle, Pa.) – The #4-ranked Dickinson men's basketball turned in an outstanding defensive effort in the second half to pull away from visiting Haverford en route to an 83-46 decision on Saturday. The Red Devils outscored the 'Fords, 42-15, after the break as they improve to 13-2 overall and 6-2 in the Centennial Conference.
Haverford challenged the Devils in the early going, playing to a 13-13 tie behind a strong start from sophomore guard Matt Sherman. Dickinson went on an 11-0 run, led by senior Gerry Wixted (Moorestown, N.J./Camden Catholic), who tallied eight points over a four minute stretch.
Senior Chris Cox (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) went to work on the boards and helped the Devils extend the lead to 29-15, with 5:12 remaining in the first half. Haverford answered in the final minutes of the half, cutting the deficit to seven.
Junior Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) knocked-down a three-pointer to close out the half with Dickinson on top, 41-31.
Wixted led the charge, scoring 12 points behind 4-of-6 shooting from the field and a 4-of-5 performance from the free throw line. Cox controlled nine rebounds to go with five points and a pair of assists while junior Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) tallied seven points, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Sherman finished the half with 15 points, hitting 6-of-7 shots to lead Haverford.
Angradi opened the second half with a three-pointer and Wixted followed up with a baseline dunk to get the crowd immediately back into the game. Wixted made a strong move in the paint and Angradi buried back-to-back triples to put the Devils in front, 54-34, with 15:41 on the clock.
Haverford cut the deficit to 14 before Dickinson answered and continued to build the lead for the remainder of the game. The Red Devils received strong play from the first-year class, led by North Carolina products, Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and Moses Romocki (Creedmoore, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons).
Cox finished one shy of a career-high for rebounds, controlling a game-high 12 on the night. Wixted finished with a team-high 16 points while Melton scored 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and added a pair of steals. Angradi knocked-down four three-pointers to reach double-figures with 12 points.
Hinnenkamp tallied nine points, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks while Steve Collins (Rydal, Pa./La Salle College) chipped in with eight points and six rebounds. Romocki had six points and six rebounds, and first-year Chris McNeal (Collegeville, Pa./Episcopal Academy) dished out four assists and controlled five rebounds .
Sherman finished with a game-high 18 points, adding three assists. James Levine reached double-figures with 10 points as Haverford falls to 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils are home again on Wednesday in a top-25 match-up with rival Franklin & Marshall. The Red Devils are currently ranked fourth in the D3hoops.com poll while the Diplomats, who suffered a 59-58 loss at McDaniel College, are currently 10th. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm.
