Box Score
(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team capitalized on a penalty kick to defeat visiting Muhlenberg, 2-1, in a hard fought match here on Thursday night at Miller Memorial Field.
The Red Devils had a great chance on an early corner as Will Bracken (Easton, Conn./Joel Barlow) put a header on the net but Nick Dusing was there for the save. Bracken had another chance, just moments later, sending a strong shot just wide of the post.
Phil Rahling fired a shot from the top of the 18, but senior goaltender Jacob Schreer (Towaco, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made the stop.
Sophomore Matt Edmonds (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) fed a beautiful through ball to junior Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington), but that shot was just wide as well.
The Red Devils would put a goal on the board in the 39th minute as Austin Thames (Frederick, Md./Urbana) and Sheppard executed a nice give-and-go on the right side with Thames finding the net off the assist from Sheppard.
Thames almost had another, just before the end of the half, but the shot sailed just high of the crossbar to keep the score, 1-0, at the break.
The Mules pulled even, early in the second half after a no-call on the sideline left Phil Rahling with a clear path to the goal on a cross from Ryan Wilson to the far side of the penalty area.
Muhlenberg continued to challenge for possession and created some strong chances throughout the second half. It would be the Red Devils who would strike again, however, as a foul in the box led to penalty kick in the 86th minute. Hylton-Dei converted the PK for his ninth goal of the season.
The final four minutes remained intense is the Devils looked to clear while Muhlenberg continued to challenge for the equalizer. The Devils would hold on, improving to 10-3-3 overall and claiming three big points in the Centennial Conference, improving to 4-1-3.
Dickinson outshout the Mules, 17-9, but held just a 6-5 advantage in the second half as Muhlenberg did a nice job maintaining possession. The Red Devils forced seven corners while allowing just two on the defensive end.
Sophomore Nick Dusing stepped into goal for Muhlenberg, making three saves on the night as they fall to 4-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the CC. Schreer finished with five saves on the night.
The Red Devils travel to #3-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Saturday for a 6:00 pm kick-off.
