(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team broke open a tight game with visiting St. Mary's College of Maryland to post a 15-8 decision at Biddle Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead, striking first at the 13:08 mark and again with 6:27 to play in the first period. Junior Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) put the Devils on the board, scoring off an assist from first-year Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) with 1:06 on the clock.
Maher tied the game with his first collegiate goal, finding the net at the 13:54 mark to open the second quarter. St. Mary's capitalized on an extra-man opportunity before the Red Devils answered with back-to-back goals to pull in front, 4-3. Junior Austin Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon) knotted the score and sophomore Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished a nice feed from Chris Clementi (Huntington, N.Y./Harborfields), with 6:13 to play in the half.
Greg Louzan tallied his third of the game with 2:29 on the clock. Junior Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) countered to put Dickinson up at the break, 5-4.
The Red Devils came out strong to start the second half, scoring three straight to stretch the lead to 8-4, in the opening four minutes of the third.
Llewellyn triggered the run, scoring off an assist from Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) at the 11:48 mark. Senior long pole Michael Smith (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) picked-up a ground ball off the face-off and went right to goal, scoring less than a minute later.
Frankel finished an assist from Dodson for an extra-man goal with 10:56 to play in the period. Kevin O'Malley traded goals with Menard and senior Colin Farrell (Newtown Square, Pa./Malvern) to give the Devils a 10-6 advantage at the end of the third.
Kendall fed Menard to open the fourth quarter with a man-up goal, just 10 seconds in. Kendall then found the net himself, scoring off an assist from first-year Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) at the 13:39 mark.
Conor Jordan scored an extra-man goal for the Seahawks before the Devils answered with three straight to stretch the margin to 15-7, with 3:52 left in the game. Strods fed sophomore Mike Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio/Berkshire), and Llewellyn tallied before Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) tallied his first collegiate goal.
St. Mary's closed out the scoring with a man-up goal at the 1:52 mark for the final of 15-8.
Llewellyn led the way with a hat-trick while Kendall and Menard each tallied two goals and one assist. Junior goaltender Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made a pair of saves, controlling five ground balls and causing a turnover. Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) forced a pair of turnovers and controlled two GBs. Slay Sudah (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph) turned in a solid game in defense as well, picking up three GBs.
Louzan and O'Malley each scored three goals for St. Mary's as they drop their opener to fall to 0-1.
The Red Devils improve to 1-1 on the year. They travel to Montclair State for a 2:00 pm face-off on Saturday.
