(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team turned in a strong effort, but suffered an 8-2 setback to Shenandoah University. The Hornets however, came into the game 9-2-1 overall, and ranked 11th-nationally in the latest D3baseball.com weekly poll.
The Hornets struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Billy Arens led-off with a double to left center and scored on an RBI single from catcher Daniel Freshley to put the visitors on the board. Mikey Paul drew a walk and came around to score with Freshley as J.J. McDaniel doubled to tally a pair of RBIs as well.
McDaniel led-off the fourth with a single and scored after Ryan Mossman doubled and Nolan Overby singled up the middle. Mossman came in a passed ball and Overby came around, following a sacrifice bunt and double by Ricky Pardo. Pardo stole third and came in on an error to put the Hornets up, 7-0, at the end of four.
The Red Devils capitalized on an error, scoring two unearned runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-2. Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) and Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) led-off the inning with back-to-back singles. Parker scored on an error by the shortstop while Helmandollar moved to third and scored off the bat of Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School).
Back-to-back walks to open the eighth led to another Hornet run and an RBI for Mossman, closing out the scoring for the day.
Arens went 3-for-5 to lead the way for Shenandoah. McDaniel went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and one run scored.
The Red Devils were held to just five hits on the day. Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) suffered the loss on the mound, recording a pair of strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) came on to combine for four strikeouts in 5.2 innings, allowing just one run.
The Red Devils slip to 5-9 overall. They are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, hosting Lancaster Bible College at MacPhail Field at 3:30 pm.
