(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team suffered a heartbreaking setback in its Centennial Conference opener, falling 8-7, at McDaniel College on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils jumped out in front, 3-1, at the end of the first quarter. The Green Terror struck first, scoring 1:32 into the game. The Devils countered with three unassisted goals after Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) found the net at the 10:15 mark.
Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) put goals on the board at the 8:37 and 4:45 marks.
Llewellyn connected on an assist from Strods to start the second, scoring just 45 seconds in. The Terror went on a 6-0 run, carrying into the fourth quarter to take a 7-4 advantage. They tallied three in the second quarter to pull even at the break, 4-4.
McDaniel scored with 11:52 remaining in the third and converted a man-up goal for a 6-4 lead, with just 39 seconds to play in the third. Pat Bivons dished out his third assist of the game to give the Terror a three-goal edge with 14:30 to play.
Chris Menard fed Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) twice in a span of 2:22 to pull Dickinson within one, at the 10:36 mark. Patrick Serio tallied his third goal of the game, to give McDaniel an 8-6 lead with 7:53 to play in regulation.
The Devils took advantage of a penalty as Menard scored off a feed from Chris Jones (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) with 2:23 on the clock.
Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) won the face-off and the Devils drew a penalty. McDaniel forced a turnover but Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) came out of the crease to pick up a ground ball and the Devils cleared.
Menard fired a shot be Eric Ritchie came up with the save and the Terror would go on to run out the clock for the 8-7 win.
Menard finished with two goals and two assists, controlling four ground balls. D.J. Henderson (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) controlled three GBs and caused a pair of turnovers while Slay Sudah (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph's) caused three turnovers and picked up a pair of GBs. Castro won nine face-offs and Baxter tallied 12 saves on the night.
Ritchie finished with 13 saves as McDaniel improved to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
The Red Devils (2-6, 0-1) return home to face Ursinus College on Saturday. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 pm at Biddle Field.
