Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team swept a pair of games at Swarthmore to open Centennial Conference play 2-0, handing the Garnet their second and third losses of the season.

The Red Devils scored twice in the second inning, using three straight singles and capitalizing on a pair of errors. Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) started off the two-run rally, followed by singles from Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill) and Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's), leading to a pair of runs on Garnet throwing errors.

A two-out double and single led to a Swarthmore run in the bottom of the third. The Devils added five runs on five hits in the fifth to stretch the lead to 7-1. Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) singled and moved to third on a double by Primavera.

Werner walked, setting the stage for RBI singles from Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) and Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Beard). Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) ground out to score another, making the score. 5-1.

Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) drove in two runs to extend the margin to 7-1. Primavera singled and Werner hit a two-run shot in the top of the seventh for a 9-1 advantage.

Back-to-back singles from Joseph Jackson and Cal Barnett-Mayotte scored Danny McMahon to make the score 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh.

Parker doubled down the left field line to lead-off the eighth inning. Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) drew a walk and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Dolan singled to score two runs and later came in and RBI for Primavera.

The Garnet looked to rally, scoring four runs in the eighth, sparked by a two-RBI single from Barnett-Myotte. That would be all however, as the Devils claimed the opener, 12-6.

Dolan went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Primavera went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. Werner added two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs while Parker finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.

The Garnet jumped on the board in the bottom of the first to start the nightcap. Wesley Fishburn singled and stole second. He moved to third on a ground out and came in to score on a base hit from John Limm. Limm was then picked-off by pitcher Garrett Kurtz (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial).

The Devils capitalized on a pair of Garnet errors to pull even in the fifth. Hopkins singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mitch Helmandollar (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro) reached on an error as he attempted to sacrifice bunt. Sumners reached on an error as Hopkins came in to tie the game.

Dolan ground out to drive in Helmandollar, putting the Devils on top, 2-1. Thompson walked to put runners on the corners with one out. Primavera scored Sumners with a sacrifice fly and Werner extended the inning with another single to left field.

A miscue behind the plate allowed Thompson to come across, all the way from second, and Haynes doubled for another Red Devil run to stretch the lead to 5-1. The Garnet struggles continued as Haynes advanced on a wild pitch and came in to make it 6-1, on a single up the middle from Nardin.

The Garnet found some offense in the fifth. An error, single and fielder's choice gave Swarthmore, 1st and 3rd with two outs. Ryan Burnett doubled to cut the deficit to four.

Helmandollar answered with a lead-off single and stolen base in the top of the sixth. He went to third on a wild pitch, setting up a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dolan.

Junior Tyler Clauson-Wolf (Philadelphia, Pa./Germantown Friends) came on in relief, recording a pair of strikeouts in a one-two-three inning.

The Red Devils tacked on a run in the in the top of the ninth. Thompson walked, stole second and advanced to third on an error. He scored on a base hit from Werner. Haynes singled and Brian McCoud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) drew a walk to load the bases. The Garnet was able to get out of the inning, trailing 8-2.

A lead-off walk led to a run in the bottom of the ninth for the final of 8-3.

Haynes went 3-for-5 in game two, scoring a run and driving in another with a double. Werner finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Helmandollar scored twice and Dolan tallied two RBIs.
