(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team rallied from a 5-1 deficit but came up short as #7-ranked Cabrini College escaped Biddle Field with a 7-5 win on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils played even with the Cavaliers for the better part of the game, dominating the third quarter. Cabrini jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring twice in the opening quarter. Mike Leyden put the visitors on the board at the 12:03 mark and dished out an assist to Ryan Hannan, with 5:14 remaining in the first period.
The Cavaliers capitalized on an extra-man opportunity as Leyden fed Evan Allvord, just 1:07 into the second. The Red Devils answered at the 8:58 mark on an unassisted goal by senior captain Brett Parker (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's School), driving down the right side.
Leyden struck again for Cabrini, finding the net with 4:23 to play in the half. The lead would stay as they took a 5-1 advantage into the break.
The Red Devils came out of halftime ready to rally, dominating the quarter with three straight goals to pull within one, heading into the final frame. First-year Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) started the run, tallying his first collegiate goal, off an assist from classmate Mitchell Andres (East Lyme, Conn./Berkshire).
Andres picked up another assist, finding Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter. Senior Austin Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon) cut the margin to just one goal, finding the net at the 1:30 mark to give Dickinson the momentum going into the final stanza.
Senior George Mazarakis (Montclair, N.J./Kent) tied the game, scoring off an assist from sophomore Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield), just 49 seconds into the fourth.
The Cavaliers regained the lead just a minute and a half later as Damian Sobieski tallied his eighth goal of the season at the 12:42 mark. Cole Campbell added an insurance goal, picking up a rebound after a great, point-blank save by Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) at the 6:30 mark.
The Red Devils kept battling, rattling off shots trying to pull even. First-year goaltender Tyler Morrell came up with some big saves down the stretch to keep the Cavaliers on top.
Leyden led Cabrini with two goals and two assists as they improve to 3-1 on the season. Morrell finished with 16 saves while Anthony DiNenno won eight face-offs and controlled six ground balls.
Five different Devils found the net while Andres tallied a pair of assists. Senior D.J. Henderson (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) caused three turnovers and controlled four GBs while Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) caused two and picked-up three GBs. The Red Devil man-down unit stopped 3-of-4 attempts on the day.
The Red Devils slip to 1-3 on the season. They return to action next Saturday, traveling to Widener University for a 1:00 pm face-off.
