(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team rallied to erase a 7-0 deficit before suffering a heartbreaking 10-9 setback, to visiting Gettysburg College on Monday afternoon. The Red Devils scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one, but were unable to plate the equalizer as Chase Stopyra came on to retire the final eight batters.
Gettysburg jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning and three in the second. The Bullets led-off with three straight singles before Wes Anderson was hit by a pitch, earning an RBI for the effort. A sacrifice fly and a two-run double by Scott Zanghellini put the Bullets in front 4-0, at the end of one.
Connor Tom led-off the second with a double, triggering a three-run inning to stretch the lead to 7-0. The Red Devils countered with three runs in the third. Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) led-off with the first of his four straight hits.
Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) singled and Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) drew a walk to load the bases. DeVivo scored on a wild pitch and Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) drove in two runs with a single.
Steven Wright doubled in the fourth and scored on a single from Anderson, and Andy Kelley added a two-RBI double to give Gettysburg a 10-3 advantage in the top of the seventh.
The Devils started to chip away at the lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. Back-to-back walks and a passed ball led to another two-RBI single from Dolan to make the score, 10-5.
DeVivo singled for his fourth straight hit to lead-off the eighth inning. Hopkins singled again as well and pinch-hitter Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) loaded the bases with a walk.
Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) singled to score DeVivo and Hopkins, still with no outs in the inning. Dolan walked and Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends) knocked in Parker with a single. Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) hit a deep ball to center, sacrificing Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) in to cut the margin to 10-9.
Mo Felt (Wheeling, W. Va./The Linsly School) Hopkins doubled in the ninth and Wachs singled to deep in the hole at short. Stopyra was able to close out the game and earn the save.
DeVivo went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and a double. Hopkins went 4-for-5 as well with a double and two runs scored. Dolan tallied four RBIs on two singles. Parker walked twice and scored twice, adding a two-RBI single.
First-year Reid Collins (New Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) turned in a solid performance in relief, allowing just two earned runs over 5.1 innings, recording three strikeouts. Felt did not allow a hit while striking out three in 2.2 strong innings to close out the game.
Anderson led the Bullets (17-9, 6-4 CC), going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Aaron Bezio recorded seven strikeouts to earn the win, going six innings.
The Red Devils slip to 10-15-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to McDaniel College on Tuesday for a 3:30 start and return home to face the Green Terror at MacPhail Field on Friday.
