(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team celebrated Senior Day with a dominant performance in a 9-5 win over visiting Swarthmore College. The Red Devils were relentless on defense, holding the Garnet scoreless for the opening three quarters, en route to a 9-5 win at Biddle Field.
The Red Devils did not allow a goal for over five quarters, going back to last week's game at Washington College. Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) was outstanding in the nets, making nine saves while the Devils forced 12 turnovers on the day.
Sophomore Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) put the Devils on the board, finding the net at the 13:29 mark of the first quarter. That triggered a 4-0 start as Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) tallied back-to-back goals and Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) scored for a 4-0 advantage, at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw just one goal, coming out of the stick of first-year Max Troast (Glen Rock, N.J./Don Bosco), just 1:43 before halftime. Baxter tallied four saves in the quarter as the Garnet held a slim, 7-6 shot advantage.
Dickinson tickled the twine twice in the final minute of the third to stretch the lead to 7-0. Troast struck with just 58 seconds to play in the quarter, and senior Mike Serpa (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) closed out the third with beautiful goal, to stretch the margin to seven.
The Devils struck again in the fourth quarter with a spectacular behind-the-head goal from Jake Harrington (Bedford, N.Y./Salisbury) off a fast-break assist from Cam Murray (Darien, Conn./Salisbury), at the 11:10 mark. The Red Devils were coming out of a man-down situation as Murray found Harrington off the clear.
The Garnet looked to close the gap, netting five goals in the final quarter. Matt Johnson went on a tear, scoring four while Cam Marsh tallied the other.
First-year Sam Saleeby (Cos Cob, Conn./Greenwich) closed out the scoring for the Red Devils, ripping a shot into the net at the 4:35 mark.
Seven different players scored for the Red Devils with Kendall and Troast leading the charge with a pair each. D.J. Henderson (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) and Michael Smith (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) each caused a pair of turnovers and combined for five ground balls.
Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fairhaven) combined to win nine face-offs. Serpa added caused turnover and a pair of GBs to his goal.
Cole Fox made 13 saves in goal for Swarthmore as they slip to 6-6 overall and 1-5 in the Centennial Conference.
The Red Devils improve to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils travel to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night, and return home to face Franklin & Marshall next Saturday at 3:00 pm.
