Late Rally Lifts Blue Jays to 10-8 Win

Box Score

(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson baseball team, coming off an 8-8 tie with Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, saw the Blue Jays rally for five runs in the eighth to overtake the Red Devils, 10-8, on Friday afternoon.

The teams went back and forth in a 12-inning affair in Carlisle on Wednesday. The Blue Jays scored twice in the top of the 12th, but Dickinson answered on a two-RBI double from Steven Haynes (Mt. Kisco, N.Y./Horace Greeley) to answer before the game was called for darkness, knotted, 8-8.

Friday's game was more of the same as the lead changed hands multiple times in Baltimore as well. Hopkins struck first, scoring lone runs in the second and third while keeping the Devils in check early on.

Dickinson pulled in front, scoring three unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-2 advantage. First-year Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) started things off with a lead-off single. He stole second, advanced on a passed ball and came across on another Blue Jay miscue to put the Devils on the board.

Junior Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) drew a walk and stole a pair of bases. He would score on an RBI single from Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) to tie the game. DeVivo scored on an RBI from junior Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield), who followed up a triple with an RBI single.

The Devils tacked on another in the top of the fifth. Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) tripled to lead-off and came in on another RBI for Thompson to stretch the lead to 4-2.

Hopkins countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go on top, 5-4. A lead-off walk and a single set the table for a two-RBI double from Chris Casey, who then came across on a single from Craig Hoelze.

Blue Jays errors triggered a four-run rally by the Red Devils in the eighth inning. Primavera singled before Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) was hit by a pitch and Haynes reached on an error, attempting to sacrifice bunt. The Blue Jays made a play of home to temporarily stall the Devil offense, with the bases loaded.

Werner came in a passed ball and Haynes put Dickinson up, 6-5, scoring on another Hopkins error. Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) drove in another run with a double to center. He would score on a single from Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) for an 8-5 advantage.

Hopkins would answer, however, pushing across five runs in the bottom of the eighth. Hopkins used doubles from Jon Conlon and Mike Smith to help the cause while Hoelze drove in two runs to finish with four RBIs on the day.

Jacob Enterlin came on to close for the Blue Jays and earn the save. Casey added two hits, two RBI and three runs scored as Hopkins improved to 10-6-1 and 2-1-1 in the Centennial Conference.

McCloud went 2-for-2 with a triple and a single while Primavera went 2-for-4 with a walk and a pair of stolen bases on the day.

The Red Devils slip to 8-10-1 overall and 2-1-1 in the CC as well. They return home to face Haverford College on Saturday afternoon at MacPhail Field. The double-header is scheduled  for a 12:30 pm start.
