(Carlisle, Pa.) –The Dickinson baseball team won a pair of thrillers to wrap up the Second Annual Red & White Day, sweeping a double-header from Washington College to knock the Shoremen out of the playoffs. The Red Devils celebrated senior day before the game and during with some outstanding performances from the veterans.
The Red Devils threatened in the first but were unable to plate any runs. Washington threatened in the third and came through with two runs in the fourth behind a two-RBI single by Joe Lozupone.
Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) led-off with a double in the seventh and Luke Besse (Marston Mills, Mass./Barnstable) reached on an error as he looked to sacrifice bunt. Scoring Chudacoff in the process.
Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) reached on a fielder's choice and came around to score on a Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends) double to tie the game, 2-2.
Washington had a strong opportunity in the top of the ninth, but the Devils held with the help of a nice pick-off at first to get Lozupone.
Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) hit a one-out single and came in to score the game-winning run as Dolan tripled to end the game.
The Shoremen scored a run in the top of the first to start game two, but the Devils answered immediately, scoring twice in the bottom half of the inning. Dolan led-off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt and came in as Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) notched an RBI single. He scored on an RBI double from senior Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield).
Garrett Richardello doubled to score Wes Robertson, tying the game in the top of the fourth inning. The Red Devils tallied four hits in the seventh to score two more runs and regain the lead. Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) doubled to lead off the inning but was thrown out at second.
Senior Sam Wachs (Severna Park, Md./Severn School) singled and Chudcoff followed with another base-hit. Besse reached on a fielder's choice before Dolan hit a triple down the right field line to put Dickinson on top.
Werner singled in the bottom of the eighth before Haynes launched a bomb over the left field wall to a two-run shot, extending the lead to 6-2.
Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) came on in relief for senior Harley Moore (Deltaville, Va./Middlesex) in the eighth inning after he recorded his sixth strikeout of the game. Moore would get the win and Cowell claimed a save, striking out two in 1.2 innings of work.
Dolan finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. He was a round-tripper away from the cycle, hitting a single, double and a triple in the nightcap. Haynes went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and one run while Werner added two hits, two runs scored and one RBI.
The Red Devils improve to 13-21-1 overall and finish 7-10-1 in the Centennial Conference. Dickinson is home on Tuesday for the season finale against Messiah College at 3:30 pm.
