#13 Bears Escape Devils 8-6 in CC Semifinal

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team traveled to Collegeville to face the #13-ranked Bears of Ursinus, in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Bears rallied in the fourth quarter for an 8-6 win.

 

The Bears struck first, scoring early in the first quarter. Steve Mussoline put Ursinus on the board at the 13:18 mark, finishing an assist from Mark Statton.

 

The Red Devils answered with four straight goals, scoring twice at the end of the first to take a 2-1 advantage. Rob Kendell (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) tied the game and junior Greg Castro (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) won the face-off and found the back of the net in a span of just six seconds, with six seconds remaining in the period.

 

The Red Devil defense came up big with some great play, forcing turnovers as the teams traded possessions throughout the first half. Ursinus capitalized on a penalty to cut the deficit to 4-2 with a goal from Steve Smyrl.

 

Ursinus cut the lead to one, scoring at the 10:30 mark on a strong dodge from Ian Moore. First-year Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) at the 7:14 mark. Ursinus cut the margin to one, once again with just 40 seconds to play in the third quarter as Jake Weber tallied off an assist from Mike Neal.

 

The Bears came away with the face-off and called timeout with 20 seconds on the clock, trailing, 5-4. The Devil defense held, but the Bears would tally to start the fourth quarter. Smyrl scored back-to-back, slipping one in the corner to put Ursinus in front, 6-5, with 12 minutes to play.

 

The Bears won the face-off and would tally moments later with an unassisted tally from Gerard Brown for a 7-5 lead. The Devils claimed a key face-off and would capitalize with a goal from Kendall, ripping a shot off an assist from Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley).

 

The Bears won the face-off but Fairchild threw the ball away, giving Dickinson possession. They drew a flag to gain a man-up opportunity on a 30-second pushing penalty. A big save from Brian Neff killed off the advantage and gave the Bears the ball.

 

Brown rolled the crease after the shot clock was turned on, and tucked away a tough shot to give Ursinus an 8-6 edge with just under eight minutes on the clock. Menard came back with a great look, but Neff came up with another big stop.

 

The Bears would hold on, making their first appearance in the conference final. Smyrl led the way wih three goals while Neff tallied nine saves. They travel to Gettysburg to face the Bullets at 2:00 pm on Saturday.

 

Kendall led the Devils with three goals while D.J. Henderson (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) tallied three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Mike Serpa (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) caused two turnovers and controlled three GBs. Nick Baxter (Boxford, Mass./Governor's) made nine saves and controlled three GBs on the night.

 

Kobi Frankel (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) tallied a goal and an assist. Castro kept things even on the face-offs, winning 9-of-17. The Red Devils close out the season. 7-9 overall.
