(Grantham, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team scored 10 runs on 10 hits, but came up short at Messiah College, falling 16-10, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Falcons tallied 12 hits on the afternoon, scoring in all but two innings. The Red Devils jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first. Benn Parker (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) reached on an error to start the game, stealing second and third. First-year Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) drew a walk and stole second to set up a two-RBI single for Henry Milano (Armonk, N.Y./Salisbury School).
Messiah answered in the bottom half of the inning, scoring a pair of unearned runs as well. The Falcons used a pair of doubles to add three unearned runs in the second. Errors plagued the Devils throughout the game as Messiah pushed across three more in the fourth to lead 8-2. Derek Drake hit a three-run shot in a four-run fifth as the Falcons stretched the margin to 12-2.
Parker was hit by a pitch to lead-off the sixth for Dickinson. He stole second and third, and scored on an error to make the score 12-3. A Devil error and a passed ball led to a Falcon run in the bottom half of the inning.
The Devils came back with three runs in the seventh. First-year Jonathan Chudakoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) drove in two runs with a single after Milano reached on an error and Mike DeVivo (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) singled to start the inning. Parker drove in Chudakoff with a double to cut the margin to 12-6.
Messiah answered again, scoring three in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run homer from Adam Janney. Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) launched a solo shot to start the eighth. The triggered another three-run inning for the Devils.
Travis Nardin (Montville, N.J./Morristown Friends) drew as second straight walk, and scored his second run on an RBI double from Chudakoff for the final of 16-10.
Chudakoff went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a run scored Milano drove in two runs on two hits while DeVivo added a pair of hits and scored twice. Parker reached four times on the day, scoring twice with a double.
Janney went 3-for-5 with three RBIs to lead Messiah as they improve to 9-10 overall.
The Red Devils slip to 10-12-1 overall. They return to Centennial Conference action on Friday, hosting Gettysburg College at 3:30 pm.
