(Westminster, Md.) – The Dickinson men's soccer team went all the way to the wire, scoring the lone goal of the match with just 1:16 remaining in the second overtime to claim a 1-0 victory at McDaniel College on Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams had chances in the early minutes as junior goalkeeper Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) made a save in the opening two minutes and sophomore Ryan Brown (Schnecksville, Pa./Moravian Academy) responded with a shot on net, just a minute later.
The Red Devils continued to press on the attack, creating another strong opportunity as senior Braeden Kelly (Brookeville, Md./Sandy Spring Friends) fired a shot off the post. Dickinson forced back-to-back corners and saw another shot from Brown at the midpoint of the half.
The match remained scoreless through the first half with Dickinson holding a 4-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corners at the break.
The second half started similar to the first with McDaniel generating a quick shot before Dickinson rattled off three, putting two on net, forcing saves from Nick Over.
The Red Devils outshout the hosts, 11-4, through regulation, adding back-to-back corners, late in the second half, but the Green Terror held, forcing extra-time.
McDaniel put a shot on net, just 30 seconds into overtime but Palcan made the save as the Terror earned their first corner of the match. The teams remained scoreless, sending the game into the second overtime period. The Red Devils had a strong chance late as senior Ned Wagner (Washington, D.C./Upper Canada College) put a shot on target, but Over was there to knock it away, giving Dickinson a corner with just over a minute to play.
The Devils would capitalize on virtually their final attempt as junior Danny Sheppard (Rydal, Pa./Abington) scored on the corner, served by senior Jonathan Harper (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) in the final two minutes of the match.
Over tallied five saves while Palcan finished with three to earn the shutout. McDaniel slips to 2-5-2 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils improve to 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference play. The Red Devils return home to face Johns Hopkins University on Saturday night at 6:00 pm.
