Box Score (Chestertown, Md) - The #5-seeded Dickinson men's soccer team suffered a first round loss in the Centennial Conference playoffs, falling 1-0, on the road at Washington College on Wednesday night. The #-4 seeded Shoremen claim the program's first Centennial playoff win to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
The Shoremen built some momentum as the first half came to a close, putting a corner kick on the net and forcing senior goaltender Jeremy Palcan (Park Ridge, Ill./St. Ignatius Prep) to make a pair of saves to finish with three for the half.
Brendan McGovern (Burlington, Vt./Kimball Union Academy) put a shot on target to start the second half, forcing Josh Samuels to tip the ball over the bar for an early corner.
The Shoremen used a free-kick to put a tough shot on goal that Palcan had to punch away.
Washington later lofted a long shot into the back of the net with 34:08 remaining in regulation to take a 1-0 lead, off the foot of Cole Strong with an assist from Demitri Kaliakin.
The Shoremen had another opportunity moments later but Palcan came out to make a big save. The hosts kept the pressure on as Chris Lewandowski directed a header just over the cross bar and Palcan punched out another bending corner.
Brian Wilkinson made a move into the middle and ripped a shot off the post that almost led to counter attack for Dickinson, but the Shoremen were able to stall the break.
The Devils did answer with two strong shots and later made a counter attack that led to a nice cross but no one was able to get a foot on the ball on the back end.
Lewandowski broke free but Palcan made a sliding tackle to knock the ball away. He would later earn a penalty kick but Palcan made the read and laid out to again deny the try.
The Red Devils produced two great chances in the final minute as Samuels punched away a shot and grabbed a header to secure the win for Washington. Samuels finished with four saves as Washington improves to 10-6-2 on the season.
The hosts held a 20-11 shot advantage with the Devils recording nine after the break.
Palcan finished with six saves on the night as the Devils finish 8-8-2 overall.
