Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team continued to fight for a spot in the Centennial Conference playoffs, avenging an early setback with a 75-66 win over second place Swarthmore College on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils celebrated senior day with Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) and Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) leading the charge.
Dickinson jumped out to an early lead as Jon Stenger (Midlothian, Va./James River) knocked down a three-pointer to start the game. Hinnenkamp dished out an assist to Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) and then hit a three-pointer to give the Devils an 8-2 edge in the opening four minutes.
Swarthmore battled back to pull even before Stenger answered with another three-pointer. The Garnet pulled in front, 14-13, on a triple from Matt Brennan. Dickinson countered with a 9-0 run, triggered by a three-point play from first-year Jule Brown (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion).
Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) converted a pair of free throws and Hinnenkamp scored twice during the run. Swarthmore came back within a field-goal and Melton played strong in the final minutes to give Dickinson a 30-26 advantage at halftime.
The Red Devils came out of the break and quickly opened a 13-point lead. Hinnenkamp converted a pair of three-point plays while Stenger buried another three-pointer in the 11-2 run to start the second half.
The Devils would hold a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half, until the final minute. First-year Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) hit a three-pointer and later made one-of-two free throws to give Dickinson a 16-point lead with 9:12 left to play.
Melton followed up a miss with a rebound and put-back to make the score, 72-54, with 3:10 remaining in the game. The Garnet kept coming, but the Devils would hold on for the 75-66 decision.
Brennan led Swarthmore (17-6, 11-5 CC) with 13 points while Shane Loeffler reached double-figures with 10.
Hinnenkamp finished with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He added five rebounds, two assists and blocked three shots. Melton tallied 11 points and seven rebounds while Stenger went 3-for-3 from long range to score 11 as well. Romocki scored all eight of his points from the free throw line, adding five rebounds, two assists, two steals and three blocked shots.
The Red Devils improve to 11-12 overall and 10-6 in the Centennial Conference. They close out the regular season schedule with road games at Johns Hopkins on Wednesday and Franklin & Marshall next Saturday.
