Box Score (Brooklandville, Md.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a solid performance, posting a 13-3 win over St. Mary's College, at the St. Paul's School on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils took control from the opening face-off, scoring four goals in the first quarter. Senior Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) scored back-to-back goals in a span of just two minutes to put Dickinson on the board, the second coming off an assist from first-year John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice).
Sophomore Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finished an assist from Will Trevenan (Montclair, N.J./Taft) at the 7:36 mark to stretch the lead to 3-0. The Red Devils closed out the period with a goal from Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello), scoring off a feed from first-year Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) with just 37 seconds on the clock.
Dickinson tacked on three goals in the second period to take a 7-0 advantage into the break. Maher tallied back-to-back goals, just 30 seconds part, and Chase Phillips found the net for the second time with 4:18 to play in the half.
Senior Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) turned away nine shots in the first half to keep the slate clean.
The Seahawks struck early to open the second half with Brendan Steele spoiling the shutout, just 1:58 into the quarter. Lockwood made it an 8-1 game, scoring off another assist for Brodie Phillips, and senior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) struck with his first of the season at the 2:27 mark.
Sophomore Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) sandwiched a pair of assists around a St. Mary's goal from Connor Jordan to give Dickinson an 11-2 lead with 10:56 remaining. Carney fed Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) and Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) for their first tallies of the season.
Steele broke free and answered for the Seahawks before Kendall closed out the game with a pair of man-up assists, finding Menard and then Maher for his fourth of the afternoon.
Baxter finished with 17 saves on the afternoon. He received strong defensive play from junior Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's), sophomore Patrick Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and first-year Jack Doran (Ardmore, Pa./Haverford School).
Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) won 10-of-14 face-offs while Bobby Hartwick (Brookville, Md./Georgetown Prep) claimed 3-of-5 on the day.
Max Alderman made 19 saves for St. Mary's as they open the season 0-1.
The Red Devils return home to face Elizabethtown College on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
