Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team dodged pouring rain and the Blue Jays of Elizabethtown to improve to 2-0 on the season with an 18-7 win in the Red Devils' home opener at Biddle Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils struck quickly to start the game, scoring twice in the opening 1:08 of the contest. First-year Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) finished an assist from senior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) to put Dickinson on board, just 28 seconds in, and first-year John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) struck at the 13:52 mark.
The Blue Jays answered at the 6:28 mark before the Devils rattled off four straight to take a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior Will Trevenen (Montclair, N.J./Taft) started the run with an extra-man goal, scoring off an assist from Mike Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor).
Dickinson tallied three goals in the final 1:14. Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored unassisted and Chase Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./Monticello) finished a feed from first-year Bodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) with 35 seconds on the clock.
Sophomore Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) found the net with just 18 seconds to play as Menard picked up his third assist of the year.
Joe Clark broke up the run, scoring to start the second quarter. Llewwellyn answered less than a minute later and Maher tallied his second of the game to put the Devils up, 8-2, with 10:47 to play in the half.
The Devils closed out the quarter strong once again as first-year Brad Zulick (Elkridge, Md./Howard) held strong to force a shot in the back of the net, with 1:15 to play in the half. Menard gave the Devils a 10-3 advantage, scoring with just 31 seconds remaining.
The Blue Jays struck first again to start the second half, but the Devils quickly regained the momentum with a 5-0 run to lead 15-4, heading into the fourth quarter. Chase Phillips fed Maher for the hat-track and assisted senior Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) with 4:16 to play in the third.
Sophomore Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) closed out the quarter with back-to-back goals in the final 1:18, scoring off assists from Dane Huber (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven).
The Blue Jays finished the day with three goals in the fourth quarter, but the Devils added three as well for the final of 18-7. Lockwood tallied his second of the day and Murphy completed the hat-trick with an assist from Strods. Junior Chris Jones (Bellmore, N.Y./Bellmore JFK) tallied with an assist from Jack O'Connell (Sands Point, N.Y./Westminster).
Maher and Murphy each finished with a hat-trick. Junior Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) turned in another strong defensive performance, causing four turnovers on the day. Campbell won 11-of-15 face-offs and controlled seven ground balls. First-year Bobby Hartwick (Brookville, Md./Georgetown Prep) won 6-of-8 attempts.
Senior Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) made four saves on the afternoon while Davis Miracle stopped 10 shots for the Blue Jays.
The Red Devils improve to 2-0 on the season. They are home again on Saturday, hosting Montclair State University at 2:00 pm.
