Box Score (Lancaster, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit to take the lead and battled Swarthmore right to the end before suffering a 77-73 setback in the Centennial Conference semifinals on Saturday night at Franklin & Marshall's Mayser Center.
Senior guard Brandon Angradi (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) opened the game with a three-pointer before the teams played to a 9-9 tie in the opening four minutes.
Robbie Walsh completed a three-point play to give Swarthmore a 13-9 advantage. Moses Romocki (Creedmoor, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) assisted Ted Hinnenkamp (York, Pa./York Suburban) for a bucket and tied the game at 13, hitting two free throws at the 14:16 mark.
The Garnet sandwiched a pair of three-pointers around a 13-2 run to take a 26-15 lead with 8:48 remaining in the half. Swarthmore got hot from beyond the arc, hitting two more to stretch the margin to 32-17 behind back-to-back three's from Shane Loeffler and Matt Brennan.
Romocki hit a pair of free throws and Angradi hit his second triple of the night as the Red Devils looked to counter the run. Dickinson finished the half with a lay-up from Hinnenkamp and a free throw from first-year Mike Hinckley (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Episcopal Academy) to trail 38-28 at the half.
Swarthmore pulled in front by 13 before Hinckley hit a three-pointer to cut the lead back to 10. The lead swayed between eight and 10 until Hinnenkamp cut the deficit to six with a pair of free throws at the 12:01 mark. He fed Romocki for a dunk to make the score 48-44.
Hinnenkamp to two more free throws and Elijah Wright (Orange, N.J./The Pennington School) knocked down a jumper to pull Dickinson even, 48-48, with 11:04 remaining.
Swarthmore went on a 6-0 before Hinckley and sophomore Justus Melton (Charlotte, N.C./Covenant Day) scored on back-to-back possessions. Brennan hit a three-pointer and Walsh answered a Hinckley jumper with a single foul shot to put the Garnet up, 58-54.
Hinckley came back with a three-pointer and just minutes later would feed Hinnenkamp for a three-ball to put Dickinson on top, 62-60.
Swarthmore came back and took a 69-62 lead as the game headed into its final minutes. Angradi scored off a defensive rebound and quick outlet from Hinnenkamp and buried a three-pointer after Romocki blocked a shot to reclaim possession.
That pulled Dickinson within a point, 68-67, with 2:08 on the clock. Brennan converted a three-point play with a lay-up and free throw, and Angradi answered with three free throws to reset the deficit to just one.
As quickly as Swarthmore built the lead back to three, Hinnenkamp converted a three-point play to keep the Garnet within striking distance. Brennan hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to secure the win for Swarthmore, 77-73.
The Red Devils had a remarkable finish to the regular season, going 11-3 in their final 14 games, winning seven straight conference match-ups to claim the #3-seed and a return to the semifinals. The Devils finish 13-13 overall and went 12-6 in the conference.
Angradi finished with 16 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers. He moves in second on the Centennial Conference all-time three-point list, finishing with 273 in his career. He went 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
Hinnenkamp led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds. He added six assists, four blocked shots and a pair of steals. Hinckley went 6-for-7 from the field, scoring 15 points and grabbing five rebounds. Romocki scored 10 points, going 6-for-6 from the line, adding five rebounds.
Robert Picka (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) grabbed seven rebounds and blocked four shots on the night.
Walsh led Swarthmore with 22 points and 11 rebounds. They improve to 20-6 on the season and will face Franklin & Marshall in Saturday's final.
