Box Score (Owings Mills, Md.) – The #18-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team turned in a strong performance against #13-Denison University in the opening round of the Green Turtle Classic at Stevenson University on Friday afternoon. The game went back-and-forth with the Big Red pulling in front late for a 9-7 win.
Denison jumped out to a quick start, scoring the first three goals of the game. First-year Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) broke up the run with a goal at the 5:25 mark to end the first quarter with the score, 3-1.
The Red Devils turned the tables in the second quarter, netting three straight to take a 4-3 advantage. First-year John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) found the net and then fed sophomore Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) less than a minute later to tie the game.
Maher struck again with an assist from Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to give Dickinson the lead at the 5:23 mark.
Liam Rooney answered with 2:51 remaining to send the game into halftime tied, 4-4.
Lockwood came through again to start the second half, feeding senior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) just 1:13 into the third quarter. He scored at the 11:26 mark to put the Red Devils in front, 6-4.
Blair Fairinholt dished out a pair of assists as Denison answered with three straight the end the quarter, taking a 7-6 lead into the fourth.
Lockwood made a great dodge, willing his way to the goal to tie the game with 12:18 remaining. Sam Fiedorek answered for Denison with 4:05 to play and the Big Red capitalized on a late penalty as the Devils were forced to press to get possession. Nick Bortolani scored on the extra-man for the final of 9-7.
Lockwood had a big day, scoring three goals and handing out two assists. Long poles Graham Parsons (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) and Zach Blumenstein (Chevy Chase, Md./Georgetown Prep) each recorded four ground balls as the Red Devils controlled 14-of-19 face-offs.
Sophomore Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) won all 14 face-offs for the Red Devils while senior Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) made nine saves and picked-up three GBs on the day.
The Red Devils slip to 4-2 overall. They are in action again on Saturday, facing host Stevenson University in the final game of the tournament, facing-off at 8:00 pm.
