#11 Cabrini Slips By Dickinson 12-11 in Overtime

Box Score

(Radnor, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team traveled to #11-Cabrini College on Saturday and battled the Cavaliers into overtime. The game went back-and-forth all afternoon with the hosts coming away with the win, scoring in the final second of the first overtime period to claim a 12-11 win.

The Red Devils capitalized on a violation right off the opening draw as senior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) scored just five seconds into the contest. Junior Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) tallied, right out of a clear to give the Devils an early 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairfield) won the ensuing face-off and the Devils struck again. First-year Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) finished an assist from sophomore Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) and Dickinson was off to a 3-0 start.

The Devils were flagged with a three minute penalty for an illegal stick. The Red Devil man-down unit held strong at the start but the Cavaliers would finally strike, scoring the man-up goal with 12:01 remaining the quarter.

Dickinson claimed the face-off but was unable to retain possession. The man-down unit again forced Cabrini to take some time off the clock, but eventually tallied again to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Senior goaltender Nick Baxter (Newbury, Mass./Governor's) came up with two  big saves and Dickinson drew an extra-man opportunity from a Cabrini slashing penalty. The Cavaliers forced a turnover but went offside on the clear, giving the ball back to the Devils.

The Cavaliers gained possession and drew a penalty. Baxter turned away another pair of shots and then Dickinson forced a turnover to go on the offensive. John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hill, Mich./Brother Rice) made a strong move to the cage, but Tyler Morell came away with a huge stop for the Cavs.

The Red Devils put together two successful rides and took a 4-2 lead with just 59 seconds to play in the first on a goal from Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) with an assist from Llewellyn.

A third face-off violation on Cabrini led to a man-up opportunity for the Devils to start the second period. Menard fired a laser into the back of the net, finishing a feed from Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) to stretch the lead to 5-2.

Junior Evan Downey answered to pull Cabrini back within a pair. Downey fed James Magnani just seconds later to make it a one-goal game. Cabrini hit the pipe but got the ball back and Magnani tied the game with his third goal of the afternoon.

Mowell and Baxter traded point-blank saves to keep the score level at the midpoint of the quarter. Ben Junior put Cabrini in front, scoring off an assist from Sean Wagner at the 7:43 mark. Lockwood countered almost immediately to knot the contest at 6-6.

Ethan Heisman rolled on the crease and finished for a 7-6 Cavalier lead, with just under six minutes to play in the half. Downey made another strong dodge and put the hosts in front by a pair, with 2:25 on the clock.

Maher got one back, rifling a shot into the upper corner of the net off another assist from Llewellyn. Jordan Krug scored out of a timeout to put Cabrini up, 9-7 to end the first half.

Baxter started the second half with a big save but Heisman came back to score on the next possession to stretch the Cavalier lead to 10-7. Menard picked-up a rebound and put the ball away to cut the deficit to 10-8. Baxter also closed the third, stopping a shot as time expired in the period.

After the offensive start in the game, the teams simply traded goals in a possession heavy start to the second half. Maher wasted little time in the fourth, however, ripping a long shot into the net to cut the deficit to 10-9.

Long pole defender Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) came up with a big ground ball. Menard went to the cage with the shot clock winding down and netted his fourth goal of the day, tying the game with 10:10 remaining in regulation.

Downey answered with an unassisted tally to quickly put the hosts back in front. Menard put away a feed from Kendall as the teams continued to trade blows.

A slashing penalty put the Cavaliers man-up, but Baxter came up with another huge save and the Devils were able to clear and kill off the extra-man. Cabrini called timeout with 3:34 on the clock to set its defense.

After Cabrini gained possession out of the timeout, Baxter came up with another big stop and fed a quick outlet to trigger a Dickinson fast-break. The Devils couldn't create an opportunity and called timeout to set up a play with 55 seconds left. Morell came up a big stop in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.

Campbell own the critical opening face-off to start overtime but Cabrini caused a turnover and gained possession. Baxter came away with a save, giving the ball back to Dickinson. Maher got open but his shot went wide of the cage, forcing a Cabrini timeout with 1:15 to go in the first overtime period.

The Cavaliers forced a turnover and Matt LoParro scored with less than a second remaining to give Cabrini its second straight overtime win.

Menard finished with five goals on the day while Maher tallied a hat-trick as well, netting three. Menard also forced a pair of turnovers and controlled five ground balls while Baxter finished with 14 saves and five GBs on the day. Campbell won 12 face-offs and picked-up four ground balls.

Morell finished with 12 saves as Cabrini improves to 3-0 in the season.

The Red Devils suffer their first loss of the season, slipping to 3-1 on the year. They return home to face Widener University next Saturday. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 pm.
