Swarthmore Slips Away in Fourth, 7-5

Box Score

(Swarthmore, Pa.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaker at Swarthmore College on Saturday, falling 7-5. The Garnet tallied the only two goals of the fourth quarter to break a 5-5 tie and claim the win.

The Red Devils took a 2-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game as senior Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) scored off an assist from sophomore Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and sophomore Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) finished a feed from Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield).

The Garnet answered midway through the quarter to make the score, 2-1 at the end of the first. Swarthmore scored three goals in the second, led by a pair from Cam Marsh to take a 4-2 advantage into halftime.

Maher scored just 46 seconds into the second half and first-year John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) tied the game, finding the net off an assist from Will Trevenen (Montclair, N.J./Taft) with 8:49 to play in the third.

Griffin Johnston countered for Swarthmore to put the hosts back in front, 5-4, with 6:08 on the clock. Trevenen fed Menard with just under four minutes to play to pull Dickinson even at the end of the period.

Matt Johnson tallied the go-ahead goal, scoring unassisted with 12:31 remaining in the contest. Marsh found Dylan Rittenhouse with 1:57 on the clock for the final of 7-5.

The Red Devils had chances, midway through the quarter but Swarthmore goaltender Cole Fox made a pair of saves around a Dickinson strike off the post. Senior Nick Baxter (Newberry, Mass./Governor's) turned away back-to-back shots on the other end as the Garnet looked to counter off a clear.

Fox finished with 16 saves as Swarthmore improved to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference.

Baxter tallied nine saves for the Red Devils while Menard led the attack with two goals and Trevenen handed out two assists. Lockwood controlled five ground balls while Patrick Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and John Bower (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) each added three.

The Red Devils slip to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference. They return home to face Muhlenberg College on Wednesday afternoon with the opening face-off set for 4:00 pm.
