Cowell Earns Complete Game Win in Home Finale

Box Score

(Carlisle, Pa.) – Dickinson senior Matt Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) threw a complete game three-hitter on Friday afternoon, leading the Red Devil baseball team to a decisive 14-3 win over Muhlenberg in the home finale at MacPhail Field. Cowell recorded seven strikeouts on the day, holding the Mules scoreless until the top of the ninth.

The Red Devils struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Back-to-back walks to seniors Ryan Dolan (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Germantown Academy) and Phil Werner (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's) led to an RBI single from Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) and two RBIs off the bat of first-year Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton).

Dickinson loaded the bases in the fifth after hits from Hopkins and a walk from Jacobson. That set up a two-RBI opportunity for Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./Pennington School) as he singled to center field, stretching the lead to 5-0.

Back-to-back walks to lead-off the seventh led to two more runs as Luke Besse (Marston Mills, Mass./Barnstable) and Hopkins scored with Brian McCloud (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) adding an RBI single in the inning.

The Red Devils used a number of pinch-hitters in the eighth, producing six more runs to stretch the margin to 14-0. First-year Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) had two hits in the inning while Matt Primavera (Erdenheim, Pa./Chestnut Hill Academy) drove in two runs with a double.

McCloud tallied two more RBIs as well while Besse and Evan Solomon (Long Beach, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) each had RBI base-hits.

The Mules closed the game with three runs in the top of the ninth behind a two-RBI single from pinch-hitter Kenny Fried.

Hopkins went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring four runs and adding an RBI. McCloud finished with three RBIs. Besse went 1-for-1 with a walk, RBI and a runs scored.

The Red Devils improve to 19-17 overall and 6-10 in the Centennial Conference. They travel to Washington College to close out the season with a 12:30 pm double-header on Saturday.
