Maher Nets Six as Devils Rout Seahawks 21-5

Box Score

(Brooklandville, Md.) – The Dickinson men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter, on the way to a 21-5 win over St. Mary's College of Maryland, in the season opener on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) tallied a hat-trick in the first quarter, netting the first goal of the game at the 11:52 mark with an assist from senior Mike Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor).

St. Mary's capitalized on an extra-man opportunity to put its first goal in the board, scoring first, just 14 seconds into the second period. They struck quickly again to cut the deficit to 6-2, just 12 seconds later.

That triggered a 5-0 run by the Red Devils as Maher finished the run with back-to-back goals while Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) and Alex Hosker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) each tallied their second of the day.

The Seahawks answered with just over a minute to play and junior Tyler Strods (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) scored off an assist from John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) to close out the half with the Red Devils leading, 12-3.

Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) found the net twice in the early minutes of the third quarter, scoring off an assist from Phillips at the 12:58 mark and netting an extra-man goal with 12:02 on the clock.

First-year Nick Goles (Monkton, Md./Loyola Blakefield) scored off a Lockwood assist before Maher put away his sixth goal of the game to stretch the margin to 16-3, at the end of the third.

Lockwood recorded his third assist, finding Corey Richards (Wayne, Pa./Haverford School), just eight seconds into the fourth period.

St. Mary's countered before Strods and Richards struck again to make the score, 19-4, with 7:55 left to play. First-year Ben Levin (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and junior Alec Beauchemin (Monroe, Conn./Newtown) added two more for the Devils for the final of 21-5.

Maher led the way with six goals on the afternoon while Lockwood finished with three assists. Six Red Devils scored twice on the day with 12-of-21 goals being assisted.

Maher added five ground balls while senior Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) led the defense with three GBs. The Red Devils combined to win 18-of-29 face-offs, led by Austin Hurdle (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) going 9-for-12 with five ground balls.

Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) made five saves in the nets before Michael Marinelli (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) came on for the final 10:41 to close out the game.

The Red Devils start the season 1-0. They are on the road again next Saturday, traveling to Montclair State University for a 2:00 pm face-off.
