Box Score 2 (Winter Haven, Fla.) – The Dickinson baseball team opened spring break in Florida with a pair of wins over Centenary University from New Jersey. The Red Devils claimed game one, 7-2, and rolled to an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.
A lead-off double and a single put Centenary on the board in the top of the first of game one. Dickinson answered with back-to-back doubles from Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) and Pat Davis (New Providence, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to start the second inning.
Davis put the Devils in front, 2-1, coming around to score on a single from Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard).
After back-to-back strikeouts to start the third, the Cyclones tied the game with the help of a walk and a single.
Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) singled, stole second and put the Devils up, 3-2, scoring on an RBI single from Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill).
Thompson added another RBI in the sixth as the Devils produced four more runs on four hits for the final of 7-2. Matilsky went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Sakowicz went 2-for-4, scoring twice.
Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) went 2-for-3 and sophomore Ryan Vasel (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) recorded seven strikeouts in a complete game win, allowing just three hits.
The Red Devils erupted for four runs in the second inning to jump out to an early lead in game two. They added three runs over the course of the next two innings to stretch the margin to 7-0. Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh School) and Matilsky each doubled in the second as Matilsky drove in two runs and scored another.
First-year Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) wheeled his way around the bases for an inside the park homerun to lead-off the third inning. Alex Jacobson (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) launched a two-run shot in the in the fourth to cap the 7-0 start.
Centenary put its lone run on the board in the bottom of the fourth, using a double and a sacrifice fly.
Jacobson tripled and scored in the sixth and Reilly added an RBI double while Adam Quine (Chappaqua, N.Y./Horace Greeley) tallied an RBI and scored to extend the lead to 10-1. Jake Bevich (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) drove in Brown for the final of 11-2.
The Red Devils pounded out 14 hits in game two, including five doubles. Jacobson recorded a homerun and a triple while Reilly had the homerun and double combination. Senior catcher Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) had two of the five doubles.
Sophomore Ben Woodard (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) went six innings, recording six strikeouts to earn the win. Chris Dunn (Bethany, Conn./Fairfield College Prep) came on to strike out three batters in the seventh.
The Red Devils are scheduled to face Trinity College on Sunday in a double-header at 3:00 and 5:30 pm.
