Box Score (Grantham, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team came away with a 6-3 win at neighboring Messiah College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Red Devils put two runs on the board in the top of the first as Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) led-off the game with a walk and scored on an RBI single from Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit).
Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) added an RBI, scoring Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) to put the Devils in front, 2-0.
A pair of errors led to a pair of runs for Messiah in the fifth, briefly tying the game, 2-2.
Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) and first-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) doubled in the sixth while Sakowicz drove in two runs with a single put Dickinson back in front, 5-2.
Messiah used a walk and a triple to get one back in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) reached in the eighth and scored on Hopkins' second RBI of the day for the final of 6-3.
Hopkins led the way, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Sakowicz added two hits, two RBIs and a run scored. Sumners scored twice on the day.
First-year Ethan Collins (Elmer, N.J./Arthur P. Shalick) earned the win on the hill, going 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run and recording four strikeouts. Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) came on for the save with additional relief from Tommy Koide (Morristown, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and Reid Collins (West Harford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford).
The Red Devils improve to 13-8 overall. They return home to host Ursinus College on Saturday with the first game of the double-header starting at 12:30 pm.
