Remarkable Rally Falls Just Short at Gettysburg

Box Score

(Gettysburg, Pa.) – The #6-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team had a tough start on Wednesday but put together a remarkable comeback at Gettysburg. The Red Devils erased a 10-3 deficit to tie the game before the Bullets escaped with an 11-10 win.

The Bullets struck quickly and jumped out to an early 2-0 lead before Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) found the net at the 12:16 mark to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Bullets continued to control play, however, running the score to 6-1 at the end of the first quarter. Gettysburg killed off a penalty at the end of the first and capitalized on an extra-man opportunity at the 10-minute mark of the second for a 7-1 advantage.

Gettysburg struck again, less than a minute later for an 8-1 lead. The Red Devils answered with back-to-back goals as sophomore Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) scored on a pair of man-up chances, the second coming off an assist from John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) with just 1:52 remaining in the half.

The Bullets came back once again as Sean Fumai netted his third goal of the game with 11 seconds to play to put the hosts in front, 9-3, at the break.

The Red Devils came out of halftime with a strong third quarter. Fumai fed Blake Gray to start things off before Dickinson came alive, scoring three straight goals to cut the deficit to 10-6, with just over three minutes to play in the period.

Carney scored off an assist from Nick Goles (Monkton, Md./Loyola Blakefield) before Maher and first-year Steve Ganelin (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) went to work to pull the Devils within three. Ganelin put one away before two straight tallies from Maher.

Maher ripped a shot into the back of the net, finishing an assist from Ganelin with 1:15 on the clock, making the score 10-7, at the end of the quarter.

The Red Devils continued to make things interesting as Maher scored his fifth goal on another man-up opportunity to cut the lead to 10-8. Maher then returned the favor, feeding Ganelin as the shot clock was winding down to make it a one-goal game with 7:09 remaining in regulation.

Maher would come through again, tying the game with 3:12 left to play. Tommy Heller would answer for the Bullets, netting an unassisted goal with just 1:32 on the clock.

Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) controlled the ensuing face-off to give the Devils possession. The Devils produced three final shots but could not net the equalizer as Gettysburg held on, 11-10.

Maher finished with six goals and an assist while Carney and Ganelin each found the net twice. Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) caused a pair of turnovers and controlled two ground balls while Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) and Patrick Finneran (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) combined for three caused turnovers and four GBs.

Junior goaltender Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) made eight saves on the day. Austin Hurdle (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) won 8-of-13 face-offs.

Tim Brady stopped seven shots for Gettysburg as they improve to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference. The Red Devils drop just their second of the season, slipping to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

The Red Devils return home to face Swarthmore College on Saturday. Opening face-off is set for 1:00 pm.
