Bears Take Two in Conference Baseball Opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team dropped its Centennial Conference opener with Ursinus College on Sunday as the Bears swept a double-header with scores of 10-1 and 6-2.

The Bears scored one in the third and one in the fourth to take a 2-0 advantage in the opener. The Bears capitalized on a pair of walks and two hit batters to push across three runs in the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-0.

Austin Kurey doubled and scored in a three-run seventh for the Bears while CJ Diana doubled and came around in the eighth as the visitors pulled ahead 10-0.

First-year Brian Reilly (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) singled in the ninth and spoiled the shutout as he came around to score on a single from sophomore Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South).

Reilly went 2-for-4 in the opener while Sakowicz added a pair of hits as well. Senior Cristian Acosta (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Berkshire School) suffered the loss but recorded five strikeouts to go over the century mark for his career, raising his all-time total to 103.

The Bears jumped out early in game two with a three-run homer from Alex Campbell in the top of the first. Sophomore Ryan Vasel (River Vale, N.J./Pascack Valley) settled in after that and threw five scoreless innings before the Bears struck again in the seventh.

The Devils looked to two-out rally in the sixth inning as Sakowicz singled and scored on a double from senior catcher Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit). Hopkins threw out back-to-back steal attempts in the of the seventh.

Reilly led-off the seventh with a walk and pinch-runner Ryan Fuscaldo (Phoenixville, Pa./The Haverford School) scored with the help of a single from Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St. John's College) and a nice sacrifice bunt from first-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) to cut the deficit to 4-2.

Ursinus used back-to-back doubles to tack on a pair in the eighth for the final of 6-2. The Bears improve to 13-4 on the season and start conference play at 2-0.
