Red Devil Split Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(Haverford, Pa.) – The Dickinson baseball team remained in the playoff hunt, splitting a double-header at Haverford College on Sunday. The 'Fords claimed the opener but Dickinson regrouped to win the nightcap, 8-3.

The Devils dropped the opener, 13-0, as the 'Fords banged out 15 hits. The hosts pushed two runs across in the first inning and added another on a solo homerun by Spencer Sohmer in the third.

Sohmer drove in two runs in the fourth as Haverford stretched the lead to 8-0. They closed out the game with another big inning in the bottom of the eighth for the final score.

First-year Max Matilsky (Bernardsville, N.J./Morristown-Beard) led the Devils at the plate, going 3-for-4. Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) continued to make solid contact for the Red Devils, going 2-for-5 while Austin Sumners (W. Trenton, N.J./The Pennington School) added a pair of hits as well.

The Red Devils found some offense in game two, forcing the split with an 8-3 victory.

Junior Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) singled to score two as Dickinson scored four unearned runs in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead. Senior Jake Band (Gaithersburg, Md./St, John's College) added an RBI single.

Three straight walks to start the fourth led to three more Dickinson runs as Rick Hopkins (Egg Harbor Twp., N.J./Holy Spirit) and Stephen Sakowicz (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) tallied RBIs.

Sumners drew his third walk of the game and scored for the second time behind back-to-back singles from Matilsky and Thompson to stretch the lead to 8-0.

Haverford scored all three of its runs in the sixth with a help of a two-run homer and a double.

Matilsky went 2-for-3 while Thompson and Sakowicz finished 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

Junior Billy O'Neil (South Deerfield, Mass./Deerfield Academy) earned the win, going five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while recording three strikeouts. He moves into second on the program's single season wins list, improving to 8-1 on the season.

Alex Gusikoff (Ardmore, Pa./Malvern Prep) and Reid Collins (West Hartford, Conn./Kingswood Oxford) went three strong innings with three strikeouts to earn the save. He eclipsed his own school record from 2016 with his fifth of the season and raised his career record to eight.
