Maher Nets Game-Winner in OT Thriller

(Collegeville, Pa.) – The #13-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team survived an overtime thriller in Collegeville, posting a 10-9 win over Ursinus College to earn the #3-seed in the Centennial Conference playoffs next week.

Junior Dylan Maher (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) found the net with 2:53 remaining in the first overtime to lead the Red Devils to victory.

The Bears struck first, taking a 2-0 lead through the midpoint of the first period before the Red Devils came alive with a 4-0 run to close out the quarter.

Alex Hosker (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) struck first before Tucker Carney (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) scored twice and senior Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished a John Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) feed with six seconds on the clock.

The Bears scored twice to tie the game with under a minute to play in the half. Connor Murphy (Summit, N.J./Summit) put Dickinson back on top, finishing the second assist of the game by Brodie Phillips (Charlottesville, Va./St. Anne's Belfield) to close out the half.

Phillips collected a feed from long pole midfielder Nate Usich (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) to start the second half before Gerald Brown scored and tallied an assist to tie the game once again.

Hosker found the net in the final minute for a 7-6 advantage at the end of the third.

The Bears scored twice to start the final period, taking an 8-7 lead with 8:13 to play in regulation. Carney and Maher countered to give the advantage back to the visitors, but Peter DeSimone capitalized on a man-up with six seconds remaining to force overtime.

Maher tallied his 41st goal of the year to give the Devils their 12th win of the season as they improve to 6-2 in the conference.

Carney led the attack with a hat-trick while Phillips scored once and dished out two assists. Senior Andy Grabis (Chestertown, Md./St. Andrew's) force a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls while Carney and Maher combined for nine GBs on the day.

Junior goaltender Andrew Jones (Odenton, Md./Arundel) made 14 saves in the nets for Dickinson. Ryan Campbell (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fairhaven) and Bobby Hartwick (Brookville, Md./Georgetown Prep) combine to win nine face-offs and control five GBs.

The Red Devils earn the #3-seed and will travel to #2-seed Gettysburg College on Wednesday for one semifinal match-up while #4-seed Swarthmore heads to Franklin & Marshall. Game times will be determined on Monday morning.
