(Towson, Md.) – The Dickinson men's tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday, playing matches against York College and host Goucher. The Red Devils opened the day with an 8-1 win over York before falling to the Gophers, 7-2.
The Devils dropped just the top singles flight against York, sweeping doubles and the five remaining singles matches in straight sets.
First-years Peter Schmidt (Morris Plains, N.J./Laurel Springs) and David Weltz (Rumson, N.J./Laurel Springs) had a dominant win in the second doubles flight, posting an 8-1 score while senior Nick Reese (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mt. Lebanon) and first-year Joey Bolanos (San Salvador, El Salvador/Escuela Americans) survived a 9-8 battle in the third.
In singles, Weltz and Schmidt earned wins in the second and third flights while Samuel Loring (New York, N.Y./Blair Academy) and Bolanos won at four and five. First-year Ben Selya (Rockville, Md.) was the winner in the six spot, adding an exhibition win in doubles.
Loring teamed with Shawn Diniz (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) for an early point against Goucher as they claimed the top flight, 8-6. Loring battled in the fourth singles flight before falling in a super tie-breaker (10-8). He won the first 6-4 but Frankie Mullinix forced the third with a 6-2 second set.
Schmidt won the other point with a 10-8 super tie-break win in the third flight after going (4-6, 6-3). He teamed with Weltz to overcome a 6-0 deficit before falling 9-8 with a 7-3 tie-break in second doubles.
The Red Devils (1-1) travel to the ITA Regionals on September 30th.
