Box Score (Carlisle, Pa.) – The Dickinson women's soccer team had a strong performance against nationally ranked Messiah College, despite falling to the Falcons, 2-0.
The Falcons, ranked ninth in the D3soccer.com poll and 11th by the U.S. Soccer Coaches Association, capitalized on a corner to put a goal on the board in the 16th minute. After a great serve from senior Skylar Ulry, sophomore Sunny Gelnovatch collected a loose ball and found the back of the net.
The score held throughout the first half as both teams were patient on offense, looking to work the ball up the field with short passes. Messiah held the run of play for the better part of the match, but the Red Devils remained composed and waited for opportunities.
The Red Devils were unable to produce any shots but did have some nice builds on the offensive end.
Gelnovatch struck again in the 58th minute, finding herself on the receiving end of a beautiful cross from Brooke Firestone for her second goal of the game.
The Falcons outshot the Devils, 12-0, but were held to just four attempts in the first half. Messiah had a 9-0 advantage on corners while junior goaltender Mary Katherine Brosnan (Old Tappan, N.J./Northern Valley Old Tappan) made five saves for the Red Devils.
Messiah improves to 6-1-2 overall while the Red Devils drop just their second match of the season, slipping to 7-2-1 overall. Dickinson had another big match-up next week, traveling to John Hopkins University on Wednesday night for a 7:00 pm start. The Blue Jays are ranked 10th and eighth in the national polls.
