Devils Play Well But Come Up Short on Monday

(Claremont, Calif.) – The Dickinson baseball team tried to rally but came up short, falling at Claremont Mudd-Scripps, 9-7, on Monday. They had a strong start but dropped the nightcap, 11-6 at LaVerne University.

Max Brown (Annapolis, Md./McDonogh) singled and scored on an RBI from Ben Carter (Wyomissing, Pa./Wyomissing) in the top of the first of game one.

Brown singled and scored again in the third inning, but the Stags pushed across two in the first, and three in second and third to lead, 8-2.

Pat Davis (New Providence, R.I./Morristown-Beard) tripled and scored in the fourth and Brown came around again in the fifth, along with Robbie Thompson (Camp Hill, Pa./Camp Hill) to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Claremont added one in the bottom of the fifth and the Devils managed lone runs in the seventh and eighth for the final of 9-7. Carter tripled and stole home in the seventh and Jonathan Chudacoff (Highland Park, Ill./Berkshire School) doubled and came in on a sacrifice fly from Brendan Pell (Delran, N.J./Penn Charter).

Carter went 3-for-4 with a triple, two RBIs and a run scored in the opener. Brown scored three runs and went 2-for-4 while Chudacoff tallied a pair of hits.

Against LaVerne the Red Devils strung together five straight hits in the first inning, including doubles from Pell and Thompson, scoring three runs. The Leopards answered with three in the bottom of the inning and used a pair of doubles and a two-RBI single to score three in the second.

They used three extra-base hits in the fifth to tack on four runs and added one in the eighth for the final of 11-6.

Dickinson scored three in the seventh without recording a hit in the inning. Chris Delsandro (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Brown drew walks with the bases loaded while Pell was hit by a pitch to drive in the three runs.

Pell went 2-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI, run scored and a walk in game two. Brown went 2-for-4 with a walk, run and RBI, and Thompson drove in two and scored once to go with his double.

The Red Devils slip to 3-6 on the season. They return to action on Wednesday, facing Redlands University at 3:00 pm pacific (6:00 pm eastern). ­­
