(Baltimore, Md.) – The Dickinson men and women's tennis teams opened Centennial Conference play at Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. The #15-ranked Blue Jay women posted a 9-0 decision while the men suffered an 8-1 setback to the 18th-ranked Blue Jays.
Lauren Altschuler (Malvern, Pa./Eastern) and Hanna Butler (Gibson Island, Md./Severn School) had a solid battle in the top doubles flight, falling 8-4. Butler moved up to the top flight for singles, taking three sets in a (6-1, 6-2) match with Anjie Kashyap.
First-year Joey Bolanos (San Salvador, El Salvador/Escuela Americans) earned the lone point in the men's match, claiming the fifth singles flight. Bolanos battled to the win (7-6 (7-4), 6-4).
First-year Peter Schmidt (Laurel Springs) and junior Derek Chen (Cranbury Township, Pa./Cranbury Township) played a strong match at second doubles, falling 8-6.
Schmidt put up a fight in the second singles flight as well, suffering a 7-6 (10-8), 6-1) decision.
Senior Samuel Loring (New York, New York/Blair Academy) put up a challenge in the number-four spot, (6-4, 6-2).
The Red Devil women slip to 4-5 overall while the men fall to 6-3 on the season. The men are scheduled to host Swarthmore College on Tuesday afternoon while the women host the Garnet at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
